The Armour of God Biblical Deliverance Ministries Study Seven The christian life is a battle. It is not a physical battle. It is a spiritual battle. Physical weapons are of no use in this battle which is why God has provided us with spiritual weapons and armour. The weapons God has given us are powerful and able to demolish any enemy strongholds. (2 Corinthians ch10 v4) Ephesions ch6 v10-18 gives us a description of the armour of God which is freely available to us. The aim of this study is to identify the armour and know how to use it. What specific commands are given in Ephesians ch6 v1013? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ What does it mean when it says our "strength is in the Lord" Compare Ephesians ch1 v19-21? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ And how does this help us? _______________________________________________________ What specific names are given to the enemy in Ephesians ch6 v11-12? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ The word "struggle" in v12 is sometimes translated "wrestle". What does this tell us about the fight? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ What are the devils schemes in v11? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ Is the enemy dangerous? What harm can he/they do to us? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________
The Armour The belt of truth What do the following verses tell us about truth and lies? Psalm ch31 v5 ___________________________________________ John ch14 v6 ____________________________________________ 1 John ch5 v6 ___________________________________________ 2 Timothy ch2 v15 ________________________________________ 1 Timothy ch3 v15 ________________________________________ John ch8 v44 ____________________________________________ To take a stand against the devil we must be a people of the truth, living out Ephesians ch4 v25. We are also to stand on the truth of God's word and walk in the light of it see Ephesians ch5 v8-9. Put on the belt of truth and it will hold the rest of the armour in place. The breastplate of righteousness A breastplate covers the chest. It protects the heart which is the wellspring of life Proverbs ch4 v23 Luke ch6 v45. Righteousness is being in a right relationship with God and other people and doing what is right for that relationship. What does 1 Thessalonians ch5 v8 tell us about the breastplate? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ What does Romans ch3 v10 say about our righteousness? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ The breastplate of righteousness does not come from ourselves or the things we do. Where do the following verses say the breastplate of righteousness comes from? Romans ch1 v17 _______________________________________________________ Romans ch3 v21-24 _______________________________________________________ Philippians ch3 v8-9 The breastplate of righteousness comes only through faith in what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross. It is the breastplate of faith and love. It is a love that is stronger than death and never fails, see 1 Corinthians ch13. To put on the breastplate is to be trusting only in the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse our sin (unrighteousness) and to put us in a right relationship with God. Feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. Shoes protect our feet. They enable us to walk long distances at great speed. An army with its boots on can be mobile the instant the commanding officer says "Go". Where has our commanding officer told us to go? Mathew ch28 v18-20 _______________________________________________________ Are you ready to share the gospel of peace? ____________________ How can we continue to be ready? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Take up the shield of faith. The shield of a Roman soldier was very large protecting the whole body. The shield of faith protects us from the flaming arrows of the evil one. What are these flaming arrows? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ How does the shield of faith protect us from the flaming arrows? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ We are commanded to take up the shield of faith. This indicates that it is not automatically up. How do you take up the shield and how often should you do this?__________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Take the helmet of salvation. The helmet protects the head. A person who is wounded in the head is out of the battle. Satan has deceived many with false ideas about God. Satan attacked Eve in the garden of Eden and tries to attack us in the same way. What is satan's aim in 2 Corinthians ch11 v3? ______________________________________________________ What does 1 Thessalonians ch5 v8 say about our helmet? ______________________________________________________ Why do you think it is called the helmet of salvation? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ The Sword of the Spirit The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God How did Jesus use the spoken Word of God in the following passages? Mathew ch4 v1-11 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Mathew ch8 v23-27 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Mathew ch9 v 1-8 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Mathew ch17 v14-21 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Revelation ch19 v11-15 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ We are commanded in Ephesians ch6 v17 to take up the Sword of the Spirit and use it. How can we take up and use the Word of God? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Pray in the Spirit. Prayer is more than just another weapon. It underlines all the other pieces of armour. We must be a people of prayer, in direct communication with our commander. What does Romans ch8 v26-27 say about the spirits role in prayer? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Ephesians ch6 v18 tells us to pray in the Spirit . How do we do that? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________
What kinds of prayers are there? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Does our prayer life include all kinds of prayers? If not what are we going to change so that we are fulfilling this command? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Why is it important to "always keep on praying for all the saints"? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________
Conclusion In all the armour there is nothing to protect your back. All the armour protects the front of us. There are probably at least two reasons for this. We are not to turn our backs and run. This will open us up to attack from the devil and he just loves to stab people in the back. We are commanded to stand firm and to stand our ground.
We ought not to fight the devil on our own. We need other christians to fight with us and protect our back. Let us fight together protecting and supporting each other. Don't ever be guilty of stabbing other christians in the back.
Finally be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that we can take our stand against the devils schemes. |
